For many of us, Christmas is the best of times, sharing precious time with loved ones and friends. When you’re homeless, Christmas can be the hardest time of all. Cold, hungry and alone, there’s often nothing to enjoy, no one to be with, and little hope of anything better.
By reserving a place you will be providing three nutritious meals for someone like John below, as well as the chance to benefit from life-saving services such as health checks, housing advice and the chance to learn new skills and perhaps most importantly companionship and support to feel like a human being again. If we can welcome homeless people in at this toughest of times, with the offer of a good meal and good company, it can be the start of getting them off the streets and out of homelessness for good, and your gift will be invaluable in making this happen.
During WW2, when John was four, his older brother was killed in the bombing. Unable to cope with the tragedy, his father committed suicide. John’s mother remarried when he was seven, but her new husband was an alcoholic and would often violently abuse John and his mum. Eventually, John and his younger brother were taken into care, but shortly after this, John’s younger brother died of leukemia and his mum drowned herself. At the age of 18 John found varied work, but between jobs was often forced to sleep rough on the streets and forage for food. During this time, he lay in fear every night, grasping his most precious possession to his chest: a picture of himself with his mother. John visited Crisis at Christmas and his life has never been the same since. This year we hope to welcome 2,800 people to our special Christmas event to offer some hope and comfort over the festive season. Why not give the gift of a place at Crisis at Christmas this year, or maybe even a whole table if you can. A hot meal at Christmas is just the start of our work at Crisis, and you could change someone’s life around for good right now.
